The Example of Report Text
Flamingo
Flamingo or flamingoe is a tall wading bird with
mainly pink or scarlet feathers and long legs and neck. They are a type of
wading bird in the family Phoenicopteridae, which is the only extant family in
the order Phoenicopteriformes. There are 4 species of flamingos distributed
throughout the Americas (including the Caribbean), and two species native to
Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Flamingos are very tall bird, proof by some of them
being up to 5 feet tall. Flamingos’ weigh usually less than 10 pounds. Their
wings are made up of delicate feathers that keep them warm, allow them to swim,
and allow them to fly. Their neck is very flexible and can be bend it downward
to eat and even backwards to preen their feathers. There are a total of 19
vertebrae found in the next which is why they can have such a wide range of
movement in it.
The webbed feet of a flamingo allow them to stand in
the muddy waters without losing their balance. Their webbed feet also allow
them to easily swim in the waters. Many people assume that flamingos don’t have
knees, but they actually do. They are just hidden beneath the wings.
When a flamingo spots potential dinner—favorite foods
include shrimp, snails, and plantlike water organisms called algae—it plunges
its head into the water, twists it upside down, and scoops the fish using its
upper beak like a shovel. They can "run" on water, thanks to their
webbed feet, to gain speed before lifting up into the sky.
Flamingos do have unique skin color. Their skin color
varies depending on what they eat. For example, the pink or reddish color of
flamingos comes from aqueous bacteria and beta-carotene found in their food
supply. A well-fed, healthy flamingo is more vibrantly colored, thus a more
desirable mate; a white or pale flamingo, however, is usually unhealthy or
malnourished. American flamingos are a brighter red color because of the beta
carotene availability in their food.
